La motivación positiva es mejor, cuando funciona. Pero es difícil motivar a un estudiante a hacer trabajo cuando está atrasado, siente que no puede ponerse al día, y está cansado de escuchar del tema.
Positive motivation is better, when it works. But it's hard to get a student motivated to do schoolwork when he's falling behind, feeling like he can't catch up, and tired of hearing about it.
La recompensa tiene que ser real, específica, y algo que de verdad quiera. No solo elogios.
The reward has to be real, specific, and something he actually wants. Not just praise.

When it's done wrong, this is what leads to lying and avoiding work. That's where Robin is now. He probably doesn't feel capable, and his teachers' comments have shown little belief in his abilities. Usaba un temporizador que contaba hacia arriba. Cuando la clase perdía concentración, lo iniciaba sin decir nada. Cuando volvían, lo paraba. Mientras más subía, más tiempo habían perdido.
I used a timer that counted up. When the class lost focus, I'd start it without saying anything. When they re-focused, I'd stop it. The higher the timer climbed, the more time they'd wasted.
La palanca: recreo extra los viernes. El tiempo acumulado salía de ese recreo. Funcionaba porque era impersonal: al temporizador no le importaba quiénes eran, solo medía el comportamiento.
The lever: a full extra recess every Friday. The accumulated time came out of that recess. It worked because it was impersonal - the timer didn't care who they were, it just measured the behavior.
